So, they went with the Panzer Kardinal who thinks fundamentalism is a good thing ("Having a clear faith, based on the creed of the church, is often labeled today as a fundamentalism.")

Well, maybe it hastens the demise of the Church.

Update--More reasons to be disgusted (and yet, not surprised) with the selection of Cardinal Ratzinger as the new Pope:

1) He's a racist. Actual Quote: Negative birth rates and immigration are changing Europe's ethnic make-up. Above all we've gone from being a Christian culture to one of aggressive secularism which at times is intolerant. (via phila at Bouphonia)

2) He tried to have John Kerry refused Communion.

3) And, of course, his medieval positions on birth control, women's rights, religious pluralism, and homosexuality (Americablog has details here and here) continue the world's slide back into the Dark Ages.
